  draft letter about TESSA interest

If you have read about Tessas here, you may like the bones of a short draft letter.

Draft first letter

The HEADING of the letter should be your Account Number, the accountholder(s), and the Branch. Here is some suggested text for you to copy, paste and adapt:

In September 2000, the Financial Services Ombudsman said that since 5 May 1999 all Tessa accounts must have

  • Paid a "fair rate of interest"     or

  • Allowed complete freedom to transfer elsewhere without penalty.

I understand that the entitlement to compensation runs from 5 May 1999 until the Tessa was closed or until account holders were told that the account was obsolete and penalties were withdrawn - whichever came first.

I am writing to ask whether compensation is due in line with the Ombudsman's ruling.

When you reply, please can you let me know

  • The date from which any transfer penalties were withdrawn

  • When account holders were told that the account was obsolete.

If either of these dates was later than 5 May 1999, please state which account you have chosen to compare with the Tessa for interest rate purposes, and the rates that were paid on it.

Yours faithfully
